Why choose Stanford for liver transplant?
Our transplant team is nationally recognized for our research discoveries, innovations, volumes, and clinical outcomes. We continue to build upon our success with expanded treatments to make sure your child has a successful life with transplant.
Experienced, national leader in pediatric liver transplant
We are a top-performing pediatric liver transplant center in the United States and a consistent West Coast leader in liver transplant, according to data from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). Our center:
- Performs the most highly complex multi-organ transplants in the nation, including liver-kidney and liver-heart transplants.
- Has provided more than 800 pediatric liver transplants since 1995.
- Has averaged 33 liver transplants per year over the last three years, as one of the busiest centers in the United States.
- Excels in three-year liver graft and patient survival rates. We maintain rates that are traditionally the top in the nation, according to data gathered by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR).
- Accomplishes the largest number of successful metabolic liver transplants in the Western United States.
- Performs as a top center in California for treating liver cancer in children.
- Offers a variety of transplant options to bring your child to transplant quickly. For example, we are a national leader in performing successful ABO incompatible liver transplants and one of a handful of transplant centers in the nation to offer adult-to-child living donor transplantation with cutting-edge 3-D laparoscopic hepatectomy.
Caring for the most challenging patients
We excel at handling the toughest challenges and taking care of the sickest babies, toddlers, and children needing liver transplants. At least one-quarter of our patients are listed as high priority due to their complex needs. Our center:
- Performs all types of liver transplants, including living donor, whole (full graft) liver, split liver, ABO incompatible, and combined solid organ transplants for a variety of conditions, including acute liver failure, cholestatic diseases, hepatitis, metabolic liver disease, liver tumors, and other liver diseases.
- Treats highly complex combined liver-heart needs. We specialize in multifaceted care (heart surgeries, liver transplants) for high-risk children, providing lifesaving and life-enhancing solutions where none existed before.
- Partners with other specialties within Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford to holistically care for your child’s multiple health needs as well as partnering with Abdominal Transplantation services at Stanford Hospital (our adult hospital).
- Works closely with the Alagille Syndrome Center by partnering with world-renowned Alagille experts to care for children with this rare genetic condition that can affect multiple systems in the body, most commonly the liver and heart.
- Provides complex, multidisciplinary care to high-risk children who appear to have few to no options.
Convenient, family-centered care
We are dedicated to giving your child lifelong care. We provide care to children within our community, from across California, and from neighboring states. To make it easier on families, our team of doctors travel to several locations in the West, a service unique to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. Our care team:
- Brings pre- and posttransplant care to patients throughout six Western states.
- Works closely with your child’s local GI/liver doctor and care team to implement a detailed care plan, with regular appointments with our team at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and at outreach centers throughout the West.
- Follows children as they grow and helps them transition into adulthood through our unique programs designed explicitly for adolescents and young adults.
- Minimizes the wait time for liver donation with innovative donor organ methods and care techniques.
