With our Pediatric Intestinal Transplant Program, the only such program in Northern California, we are a respected leader in providing comprehensive care for pediatric intestinal transplants. Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford has one of only three programs on the West Coast. We’ve performed more than 50 pediatric intestinal transplants since our program’s inception, maintaining a 100% three-year success rate since 2014, according to data gathered by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR).
When your child needs intestinal transplant, our large team of multidisciplinary experts works together to provide a detailed plan that uses advanced surgical techniques, skilled infection prevention, personalized treatment, and timely placement on the transplant waiting list to significantly improve your wait for transplant and your child’s lifelong outcomes.
Why choose Stanford for intestinal transplant
Our Pediatric Transplant Center is recognized across the nation for our high volumes, research discoveries, innovations, and clinical outcomes. We continue to build upon more than 30 years of experience with an integrated approach to make sure your child has a personalized plan of care leading to a successful transplant. By caring for your child before, during, and after transplant, we help your child in living his or her best life.
Care for the most challenging patients
We excel at handling the toughest challenges, taking pride in offering transplants to children of all ages with serious abdominal conditions, even those who’ve heard that they have few or no options:
- Perform more highly complex multi-organ transplants on children than other large transplant centers nationwide, including small intestine transplant in combination with a liver, pancreas, or stomach transplant.
- Known across the nation for transplanting very sick and very tiny babies, as small as 6 kilos (13 lbs.).
- Offer specially trained transplant anesthesia, a skilled dedicated transplant intensive care team, and extra expertise via our partnership with the abdominal transplant team at Stanford Medicine.
- Employ advanced diagnostic technology and state-of-the-art endoscopic treatment to evaluate gastrointestinal anatomy and pinpoint the presence or extent of disease.
Multidisciplinary approach to optimize care
We bring pediatric specialists and subspecialists together to customize your child’s care team, with your family at the center:
- Partner alongside our Intestinal Rehabilitation and Nutrition Support program to provide exceptional, comprehensive care tailored to support your child’s GI system and nutritional needs.
- Use novel techniques designed by our small bowel specialists to enhance your child’s intestinal function.
- Ensure that your child is in optimal health before intestinal transplant to achieve ideal transplant outcomes.
- Work diligently to provide family-centered care by partnering with you as a member of the care team.
- Manage and coordinate your child’s care during evaluation, preparation for transplant, and long-term care management via your transplant coordinator.
- Develop a coordinated plan of care to support your child’s health care journey in collaboration with dedicated social workers.
- Partner with families to give support every step of the way.
Convenient on-going care
Many of our patients live outside our region. To make it easier on families, our transplant team travels to several outreach clinics to provide care multiple times a year, a service unique to Stanford Medicine Children’s Health:
- Bring pre- and posttransplant care to patients in multiple cities throughout five Western states. We regularly visit outreach locations across California, and in Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, and Hawaii, eliminating the need to travel back to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.
- Partner with your child’s local gastroenterologist and primary care provider to collaborate, develop, and implement a detailed care plan, with regular check-ups to convenient on-going care from our team.
