Pediatric Kidney Transplant Conditions We Treat

Many of the infants, children and adolescents who need a kidney transplant have been living on dialysis—an artificial process that replaces the non-functioning kidneys. For these young people, kidney transplantation offers a longer-term solution and the prospect of better health and greater independence.

The children that aren’t living on dialysis, but suffer from a complex kidney disease, may or may not need a kidney transplant.

Some of these conditions include:

• Alport syndrome.
• Autoimmune focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
• Berger’s disease.
• Blockage of the kidneys present at birth leading to a back-up of urine into the kidneys caused by:
  • Megaureter.
  • Posterior urethral valves.
  • Prune belly syndrome.
  • Ureteropelvic junction obstruction.
  • Vesicoureteral reflux.
• Congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT)—Conditions that are present at birth.
• Congenital nephrotic syndrome.
• Glomerulonephritis.
• Goodpasture syndrome.
• Hemolytic uremic syndrome.
• Henoch-Schönlein purpura.
• Nail patella syndrome.
• Nephropathic and juvenile cystinosis.
• Oxalosis.
• Polycystic kidney disease.
• Renal dysplasia—When your baby’s kidneys do not form or grow correctly during pregnancy.
  • Renal agenesis—When kidneys never develop.
  • Lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO)—A blockage in a fetus’s urinary tract.
• Schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia (SIOD).
• Wegener’s granulomatosis.
