Normal Thyroid Function

The thyroid gland is an endocrine organ that produces and stores thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones are released by the thyroid gland through complex signaling pathways in your child’s body. Thyroid hormones have the ability to control nearly every part of the body, including blood pressure, temperature, and metabolism.

Thyroid Dysfunction

Thyroid dysfunction in children is uncommon. Most thyroid problems arise spontaneously, though some congenital syndromes increase the chance of thyroid abnormalities. Although rare, thyroid masses, are the most common specific thyroid lesion treated by ENT (Otolaryngology) doctors.

Some thyroid masses require only a physical examination and observation. For other masses, an ultrasound study, needle biopsy, or surgery for removal of thyroid gland masses are sometimes performed. Because each thyroid problem is unique, it is important to discuss the management of your child’s thyroid problem with your endocrinologist and otolaryngologist (ENT).
