“There's a tremendous amount we can do to help men with fertility.”
I'm the director of the Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery program at Stanford. I specialize in male infertility and sexual dysfunction, and deal with problems related to testicular function including problems with sperm and testosterone production.
There's this perception that fertility is always a female problem. That is not the case — about half the time there's a male factor. There's a tremendous amount we can do to help men. Here at Stanford we are pioneering research into factors that are important in a mans reproductive health, discovering aspects that can be targeted and improved to make men more fertile and healthier in general.
When infertile couples come in, they can often be really lost, especially the men. I think my male patients feel comforted knowing that I'm taking a good look at their health. There's a lot of different paths; I work hand‐in‐hand to figure out the best way for each patient to achieve their goals. The relationships I have with my patients are so rewarding. When they bring in their baby, or send me a card telling me they got pregnant, that's especially gratifying.
